About Together for the Church of England
Together for the Church of England (charity number 1209277) formed in 2024 with a focus on improving diversity, equality and inclusion within the C of E with a particular focus on engaging with governance. We are organised through the national charity with a part time National Co-ordinator and eleven Trustees. In addition to this we co-ordinate a group of General Synod members (Together on General Synod – TOGS) and have networks in the majority of the Church of England’s dioceses.
Through the Church of England we are committed to a Christian presence in every place, rooted in parish, deanery, diocese and nation. The Church’s ministry extends to all people in those places. We respect the diversity of human experience before God regardless of ethnicity, disability, sex, gender, gender identity, sexuality, mental health, neurodiversity, marital status, socio-economic background or economic power. We believe that our diversity is part of God’s creative plan for humanity and a cause for affirmation and celebration.
Some examples of our work so far include:
- Working on Living in Love and Faith (LLF), the Church of England’s project looking at inclusion for LGBTQIA+ people in the life of the Church. This work has included co-ordination on General Synod, distributing information to diocesan networks, and being involved with policy development group work.
- Working through the General Synod to commission a national strategy for the support and encouragement of working class people in discernment and training for ministry.
- Supporting the work of the Racial Justice Unit of the Church of England.
- Advising groups working on disability justice issues in the Church of England.
- Advising diocesan networks on governance issues such as elections to Diocesan Synods, Bishop’s Councils and other diocesan bodies.
- Co-ordinating meetings of inclusive organisations that work in a Church context to be able to share common concerns.
- Supporting candidates standing in General Synod by-elections, ensuring a representative inclusive voice and aiming to improve the diversity of the Church’s national assembly.
A major piece of work through 2025 and 2026 will be working in partnership with Inclusive Church and other inclusive organisations towards the General Synod elections in 2026. Alongside this will be continuing to sustain and support the Diocesan Together Networks, along with supporting Together on General Synod. The need to keep raising the profile of Together for the Church of England is particularly important given that we are a newly established organisation which is seeking to work across the breadth of the Church.
